Opinions are a dime-a-dozen, but what a wonderful program!!!!!!!!!!
I miss it very much and wish it would return to the airwaves.
A good spot for it to return would be TV Land.
Surprised to hear it is just going to become available on DVD I think by June 27 of this year.
While I am sure after watching it again enough times I'd get a little tired of it, the memories it would bring back really you couldn't put a price tag on.
I don't know if there any saved statistics on how popular the program was with the public when it was in its day.
In my mind, it ranked right up there in the top 3-4 programs during the mid-late '70's and early 80's.
Growing up in east-central Illinois during the '70's and early 80's as a teenager will always allow me to have many fond memories of this program.
I believe it has value to this generation of TV viewers as well as future generations.
For me, I think the best years were the early years, 1976-78 and then up to 1980.
My favorite character was Alice, and I felt Linda Lavin portrayed the part quite well and brought a great deal of acting ability to the part.
But together, the entire cast made this program a worthwhile series.
From Vic Tayback to Phillip McKeon, including Flo and Vera, the entire program achieved a five-star rating in my mind.
During the mid-late '70's, it had to rank up in the top 3-4 programs I would think.
I will always remember it and will praise the day it returns to the airwaves, or I can somehow get it on a VHS tape, which is becoming more extinct by the minute it seems.
While I am sure it was a lot of long, long hours of hard work during rehersal, tapings and retapings, I'd like to think the cast had alot of fun in making the shows, because they brought alot of fun and entertainment to myself and many millions of others during the 1970's and 80's.
Why was the program so successful?
I think it had a great plot and idea to spin off of.
The movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," served as a great and realistic premis to this TV Series.
And it was believable.
While I can't remember a whole lot about the movie, I know I have seen it at least once, but probably 25-26 years ago.
It's too bad programs, people and things in life have to come and go, but that's the way life is.
You can't bring back the past, but in a sense, with a TV series, you can, provided it gets put back on the airwaves or becomes available on DVD and/or VHS tapes.
Hopefully, someday someone with the authority or power will see that the program "Alice" returns to the airwaves, probably TV Land.
You have to admit, it, along with many, many other programs of the 1970's-early '80's are much more wholesome and of a genuine entertainment value than what TV has diverged into today.
